Hello, everyone!

We are officially closing the month of September. October is the start of the last quarter of the year AKA the busiest time of year for me at work. Time management will get very important from now until January 31. Please pray that I survive.

What Happened in September? [Monthly Recap at High-Heeled Love]

Anyway, let's have a quick look back at the last month. Here are the details of what happened in September:

Hello, friends!

Will you join me for a cup of coffee? It's been a few weeks since we've had a virtual coffee date. Let's share a beverage and catch up.

Let's Celebrate National Coffee Day with a virtual coffee date. [Virtual Coffee at High-Heeled Love]

It's National Coffee Day; don't forget to stop by and get a free cup somewhere. Here's a few places that are doing specials.
Y'all know tomorrow is #NationalCoffeeDay, right? #coffee = life

So, I'm going to tell y'all that I love that the weather is cooling off for fall, but it has been gray and drizzly every day for the last week. I'm not sure I can handle it; I need a little sunshine.

Everyone please keep your fingers crossed that we have sunshine by Friday when I'll be driving to New Orleans. Rainy weather when I have 12 hours of driving is not my idea of a good time.

Nearly all of my energy this week is focused on getting ready to head out of town. I'm trying to get all my work stuff caught up so I can (mostly) not worry about it while I'm gone. I'm also working hard on scheduling a lot of the bloggy business too.

Over the weekend, I took the Streamline Your Space workshop. I'm still slowly working through the lessons, but so far, I'm so pleased with the content. I have learned about several great tools and tips to make blogging and social media easier and faster. My favorite accomplishment so far is a custom email signature.

So I know this is a Dawn detergent ad, but I love this video. When I was younger, seals were my favorite animals. The babies in this video touch my heart.

On the note of furbabies, my little one hasn't doing so well. His right eye starting running about a week and a half ago, and we just thought it was allergies. On Friday, he starting showing pain on the right side of his mouth as well. After watching him lie about all weekend without any interest in playing, we decided he needed to see the vet yesterday.

The vet suspects an abscess in his mouth or gums and has prescribed antibiotics. I know it takes a couple days for them to do the job, but I just want him to feel better. I miss my high energy, playful terrorist of a puppy.

Okay, so that's about all I have to share this morning. Thanks for joining me for coffee today, and don't forget - National Coffee Day. A lot of the national chains are running specials.

Tell me what's on your mind this week. Is the weather reflecting fall temperatures where you're at? Will you have a fall beverage for National Coffee Day?

Monday, September 28

I had lunch today with a friend who has been married to his wife for 43 years. They're dealing with health challenges, but he was quick to point out how sticking to each other through thick and thin is the only way they'd get through it.

I think it's amazing that they've had such a long, happy marriage. It's something that I really admire because these days, people seem to be divorcing left and right. I guess I honestly admire when anyone can sustain a relationship over decades, whether it be romantic, platonic or family.

Like I'm Gonna Lose You [Musical Monday at High-Heeled Love]

And even when things are good, you don't know when someone might be taken from you.

If you're new around High-Heeled Love, then you don't know that we lost my mom when I was only a teenager, and she's been crossing my mind a lot these days.

I wonder what she might think about our goals to get some land out in the country. I wonder what advice she'd give me about running my business. I miss her when I run into the challenges of being an adult or when we hit a bump in our marriage. Somehow, I know she'd have the right words to say.

And while I'm thankful that I have an amazing step-mother and mother-in-law (and they are wonderful and very good to me), I just miss my mom.

So my challenge to you this week is take a few minutes to appreciate those people in your life who are easy to take for granted because they are just there...and then tell them how special they are to you.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Welcome to the Weekly Round-Up linky party, hosted by me and Miss Angie from My So-Called Chaos.

This party is all about sharing those fabulous blogs that you've read through the week and promote our blogger community. I hope it will help you use this party to find new blogs to read and build some new blogger friendships.

So, here are the rules:

1. Grab the button.
2. Write a little list of your favorite reads this week and why.
3. Link up below and go find some fabulous new ladies to be friends with.

Grab button for WEEKLY ROUND-UP at HIGH-HEELED LOVE-button

That said, here were my favorite reads lately:

3 Secrets to Thinking like a Champion from Fit Bottomed Girls [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
This post from Fit Bottomed Girls about ways to think like a champion is framed with athletic performance in mind, but I think you can apply the thinking to any goal or challenge. Personally, I plan to apply these secrets to successfully getting through my busy season at work.

Halloween Monster Doors from Good to Know [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
October starts this week, so it's seasonally appropriate to start decorating for Halloween, and these monster doors, shared at Good to Know are just too cute.

How to Prepare Your Budget for Christmas from The Budget Mama [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
I know it seems crazy to be talking about Christmas already, but trust me, you need to at least be thinking about the Christmas budget if you want a relatively peaceful holiday season. The Budget Mama is going into her third debt-free Christmas and has some ideas to get your budget ready for the holidays.

DIY State Inspired Cork Board from IHeart Organizing [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
With us having weekly budget committee meetings (see our Financial Peace University Week 2 Check-In), it seems like a good idea to start thinking about a family command center for our home. I think this DIY State Cork Board, which is a Two Twenty One project featured on IHeart Organizing, is a super cute touch.

Hi everyone!

Welcome back for our Week 2 check-in on our Financial Peace Journey. Click here if you want to get caught up on week 1.

Financial Peace University is a weekly course that takes place over the course of 9 weeks; if you're interested in checking it out, you can go to his website www.DaveRamsey.com and search for nearby classes. We're taking ours through our church.

Financial Peace University - Budget Committee Meetings, Slashing Grocery Bills, Zero-Based Budgets [Week 2 Check-In at High-Heeled Love]

So the homework from Week 2 included holding our first budget committee meeting to discuss our initial budget and make some changes. The goal was to keep the meeting shorter than 17 minutes, and we both had to participate.

This went much more smoothly than I had expected. Our biggest changes were to reduce the grocery and entertainment categories so that we could add lines for clothing and jujitsu event savings. Before the meeting, we had discussed clothing coming out of our "pocket money."

This week's homework, we'll be writing out a zero-based budget, basically means we allocate a place for every dollar to go, and start using cash envelopes for some expense categories.

Financial Peace University - Budget Committee Meetings, Slashing Grocery Bills, Zero-Based Budgets [Week 2 Check-In at High-Heeled Love]

In anticipation of this, I tried to make sure our grocery shopping for this week was in line with our allowed amount of $75/week (or $300/month) since groceries and eating out are two expense categories where we know we can cut back.

  • If you've read my meal planning post, you know that I have been shopping sales at Publix for a long time and pairing with coupons. You can see from the receipts that through sales+coupons, we spent $16.70 than full price; the total was $42.54.
  • This week, I decided that I would see which of my non-sale grocery list items might be on sale at Bi-Lo. Bi-Lo is literally on the way to Publix so it super convenient to stop there first. Every item I purchased there was on sale AND cheaper than I would have purchased it for at Publix; I didn't have any coupons this week. Through sale prices, we spent $16.07 than full price; the total spent was $20.27.
  • We have one more grocery expense coming this week; since I will be out of town, I'm paying for produce from the veggie service we work. Usually, that's part of our "pay" for working, and since I'm on the team, the owners give us a discount when we purchase extras. The expected expense is $11.50.

Total for the week: $74.31

One more thing on the note of groceries: I scan all the applicable items using the Ibotta grocery app to earn small cash back rebates. Some weeks that earns me $.20; other weeks I earn several dollars. These amounts add up over time. Ultimately, I can cash in for paypal cash or gift cards. The key to really earning with Ibotta is for a team to work together to unlock additional bonuses, so please feel free to join me; my referral code is wrcjxlq.
Financial Peace University - Budget Committee Meetings, Slashing Grocery Bills, Zero-Based Budgets [Week 2 Check-In at High-Heeled Love]

Other tasks, we're aiming to accomplish this week:

  1. Open a joint checking account; we've maintained separate accounts up to this point in our marriage. These won't go away, but we've decided we now need a household account to handle mortgage, utilities, insurance, etc.
  2. Stop all monthly bank drafts in separate accounts so they can be moved to the new household account.
  3. Decide which categories we'll switching to cash and set up the envelopes.
  4. Begin evaluating where we can save in other areas of our budget.

Do you have regular budget meetings in your household? What are two categories in your budget that you know you could save in?

Good morning, friends!

I hope you're having a fabulous week so far. I've been seeing a lot of new faces around here and on the High-Heeled Love social pages lately, so I thought this morning, I'd introduce myself again.

Hello and Welcome! [Introductory Post at High-Heeled Love]

I'm a lifestyle blogger living in South Carolina. High-Heeled Love was started in 2009 to share my wedding plans with friends since they are scattered all over the country, and by the time I was married, I was in love with the blogging community.

One any given day, I might be sharing my love of shoes, coffee, wine or my pets. My husband and I have two dogs: Paige, a rescue who joined our family about six years ago, and Roscoe, a pit bull puppy who wandered into our neighbors yard last November at about four weeks old.

Hello and Welcome! [Introductory Post at High-Heeled Love]

My husband and I both take jujitsu, and my goal is to test for my black belt next year, so expect to hear more about that as we get closer to the exam. We also started the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace course this month, so monetary goals and money-savings ideas will show up more often.

I currently host three recurring linky parties:

  • Friday Confessional is a weekly party to for us all to vent, share funny stories and otherwise clean our slates before the weekend.
  • Weekly Round-Up on Sundays, co-hosted with Miss Angie from My So-Called Chaos, is a party to grow our blogging community by sharing a round-up of favorite blog reads each week.
  • Wino Wednesday is a monthly party that opens on the second Wednesday of each month. Share anything wine-related: memes, products, recipes, etc.

Other parties I regularly participate in include Musical Monday, Monthly Goals, Fit for Me Thursdays.

I hope that gives a quick idea of who and I am what I write about. If you have questions, please feel free to email me at highheeledlove@gmail.com.

Monday, September 21

I've been thinking a lot about dreams the last couple weeks. A couple weeks ago, the Mister and I spent a morning discussing this question:

What do we want our life to look like as we building together? More specifically, what do we want it to look like in 3-5 years?

We pay my business off in 4 years, and once we meet the financial goals we're setting through our Financial Peace class, we will definitely have more choices. If we're going to stick with the budget goals that we're setting for ourselves, we have to identify our why. We have to know our dreams.

Chasing Our Wildest Dreams [Musical Monday at High-Heeled Love]

For me, paying off the business is the benchmark that allows us to start a family. Those payment dollars can either allow me to hire someone so that I can be away from the office more or replace the Mister's income so that he can be home.

And this is the point where we begin to consider moving. We love our current house and neighborhood, but we'll need more space if we're growing our family, and we want more land.

My Mister wants to farm. He wants to live more sustainably with things like solar panels and rain collection systems. He wants a greenhouse, a potting shed and a workshop. If we try to do that all on our current property, it will be very crowded.

One of these days, we'd also like to have our own jujitsu dojo. In five years, I should be of rank to teach, so it's pretty realistic to think that we may have students of our own. And if we move away from town, we may not be close enough to make it regularly in for the classes we currently attend.

So, we're dreaming. We're dreaming big.

We are dreaming about a farmhouse with acreage in the country. Something with enough land for him to get his hands in the dirt. Something with room for a family to grow and guests to visit. Something with a space for my home office and our own jujitsu program.

Chasing Our Wildest Dreams [Musical Monday at High-Heeled Love]

I guess all this rambling is to say that we're trying to create a plan. Because you have to begin with the end in mind. You have to make a plan if you want to accomplish your dreams.

I don't know if this song quite fits the theme of the post, but the title sure does so it is today's Musical Monday choice. I was surprised when the Mister told me how much he liked this Taylor Swift song. He's been a really good sport of regarding my girl crush on Miss Taylor. I'm sharing the video because I think it's visually stunning.

That said, here were my favorite reads lately:

Purging Your Closet from The Happy Housie [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
It feels like my closet is in need of a major purge; so, I was glad to come across The Happy Housie's post about purging clothing. She takes her process a step further and hosts a clothing exchange; I think mine are going to Plato's Closet to see if we can make a few bucks to put into savings.

Organizing Make-up & Make-Up Brushes from Pink Heels Pink Truck [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
Yesterday, I was texting with my SIL about trying to pare down my cosmetics budget (as part of our Financial Peace Journey), and I feel like this Pink Heels Pink Truck post about organizing make-up and make-up brushes is a good starting point. Once I have a feel for what I have on hand, I can spend less as I replenish.

Women and Education from Life of Bon [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
I totally agree with Life of Bon about how important it is for women to make education a priority and make it a priority in international matters. It is totally true that some doors just don't open as easily for women as they do for men.

Letter to my Daughters about Make-Up from Meg O. on the Go [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
I found this letter from Meg O. on the Go to her daughters about make-up to be really touching. I think it's great for ladies to wear make-up if it gives them a little boost of confidence...as long as it doesn't become a crutch.

With my work trip to New Orleans on the horizon, I'm trying create a better plan for the blog while I'm out of town. This post from Bloggers Get Social of travel tips is super helpful to me.

I figure that after months of talking about starting the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University that it would be a good exercise in accountability to discuss our journey.

Financial Peace University is a weekly course that takes place over the course of 9 weeks; if you're interested in checking it out, you can go to his website www.DaveRamsey.com and search for nearby classes. We're taking ours through our church.

Financial Peace University [Week 1 Check-In at High-Heeled Love]

We had a date last night to do the Week 1 homework, which included in completing the quick start budget and totaling up our debt & cash on hand. We also read the first chapter of The Complete Guide to Money. I figured this was going to be a rough exercise, but necessary.

I'm not comfortable sharing the exact numbers of our situation, but I will say that our cash on hand is about 10% of the debt, which is a very unsettling thought. However, we both knew that if we want to get debt-free we would have to come face-to-face with the facts.

So after dealing with the hard numbers, we made a nice dinner and drank some wine. The toast was to "Financial Freedom." We started our marriage debt free, and we're both ready to get back to that.

A photo posted by Aubrey S (@highheeledlove) on

Then we decided to focus on the positive steps we've already taken. Since we knew that we'd be taking this class, we started working on a few things last month. Here's where we've done so far:

  1. We've completed Baby Step 1. If you're unfamiliar with the Dave Ramsey's Baby Steps, the first step is to save $1000. Luckily, we've had that sitting in a money market for years; we just had to declare it the Emergency Fund.
  2. We're already meal planning and shopping the grocery sales with coupons.  For us, food is one of the biggest discretionary parts of our budget. We decided a while ago that we were eating out way too often; so, we're working on reducing it. I wrote a post about meal planning a while ago if you want to see what we do.
  3. We've started working on the debt snowball. I know this is a couple lessons/chapters down the road, but my former business partner had explained the concept to me so we decided to start throwing all the extra money that we could at the credit card statements, starting with the highest interest card.
  4. What can we do to grow our income to help pay the debt down faster?

So, here are a few things that we need to figure out over the next few weeks:
  • What is the big "why;" are we on the same page about long-term goals? Do we need to adjust timelines on any of these goals?
  • What constitutes an emergency?
  • What parts of our current monthly expenses can we start reducing? How much do we want to allow for some of the discretionary expenses such as clothing and entertainment?
Okay, I think that's as much as I have to share at the moment. We have class in the morning, so I may have more to say on this later in the week.

What's one financial goal your family has? If you have to give up one splurge to get on track financially, what would it be?

Hello, lovelies!

I confess...

This week has required a lot of travel and meetings, which has been putting the blog on the back burner a little bit. However, I'm really excited that next weekend, I'll be participating in a blogging workshop called Streamline Your Online Space later this month that I'm really excited about.

I confess...

I stopped for gas the other day on the way home from a meeting out of town, and the gentleman at the pump next to said I was the best dressed person he'd sign on his drive up from Florida. That the kind of compliment that just makes my day.

It's great to have a couple outfits that make you feel like a million bucks; my red dress is one of those.

I confess...

Tonight will be our first homework night for the Dave Ramsey course that we started last weekend. I'm excited to be making forward progress, but I'm a little scared that we're not going to like what we see on paper.

BUT you can't fix a problem if you don't know you understand it, and we've known for too long that we need to be living by an actual written budget, not just hoping that we make enough to pay the bills.

I confess...

Today is National Cheeseburger Day. We usually have pizza on Friday nights at our house, but that's not the plan for tonight. Cheeseburgers are one of the main reasons I'd never be able to become a vegetarian.

I confess...

I don't think I've mentioned it on the blog, but I'm heading to New Orleans in two weeks for a work conference. I've never been to the city, and I'm super excited for this trip.

If you have favorite places to visit, please leave them below in the comments. I don't know how much free time I'll have to play tourist, but I want some ideas for whatever time I do have.
