The Mister and I don't have any children, but for me, the new academic calendar seems to a time where I find myself taking stock of life and determining what changes need to be made.

This year, I've decided that I want to be a lot more proactive at getting ready for open enrollments at work. I just can't do another fall of being stressed to the point that I make myself sick.

I've also been looking around the house and trying to determine what can be changed or let go of altogether to make life easier. Some of this involves setting some household systems and routines back up that had fallen by the wayside.

And some involves just going for the things that we want. Less planning. Less dreaming. More doing.

I guess I just don't want another year to close (because the end of 2015 will be here faster than we realize) with me saying "I wish I would have..." again this year.

What about you? Is the start of a new school year a new beginning for your household? And what are you starting, improving or letting go of?

Sunday, August 30

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Welcome to the Weekly Round-Up linky party, hosted by me and Miss Angie from My So-Called Chaos.

This party is all about sharing those fabulous blogs that you've read through the week and promote our blogger community. I hope it will help you use this party to find new blogs to read and build some new blogger friendships.

So, here are the rules:

1. Grab the button.
2. Write a little list of your favorite reads this week and why.
3. Link up below and go find some fabulous new ladies to be friends with.

Grab button for WEEKLY ROUND-UP at HIGH-HEELED LOVE-button
<div class="WEEKLY-ROUND-UP-HIGH-HEELED-LOVE-button" style="width: 500 px; margin: 0 auto;" align="center" > <a href="http://www.high-heeledlove.com" rel="nofollow"> <img src="http://bit.ly/WeeklyRoundUpButton" alt="WEEKLY ROUND-UP at HIGH-HEELED LOVE" width="500" height="331" /> </a> </div>

That said, here were my favorite reads lately:

Meal Planning Challenge from I Heart Planners [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
We're wrapping up another month, which means I'm on the hunt for new challenges, and I'm liking this Meal Planning Challenge from I Heart Planners. I try to loosely follow a plan anyway, but it will be fun to see if I can keep it up for 30 days in a row.

Good, Bad & Ugly of Kitchen Renovation from I Heart Organizing [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
I've been meaning to share some progress updates on our living and dining room for quite a while and was feeling badly about it since we've been working on the project for more than a year. Reading this "good, bad and ugly" report about renovating from I Heart Organizing was just what I needed at this point. Renovations take a lot of time, and sometimes you have to live in the space to pinpoint what it still needs.

The Power of Words from Hugs and Lattes [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
Hugs and Lattes has been featuring posts about becoming a world changers, and one of her posts was about believing that we are enough. It made me think of a of a conversation the Mister and I had this weekend about how much pressure there is to fit a certain mold (specifically regarding physical appearance) for younger women in our society today. We all need to believe in ourselves and our talents a little more and worry a little less on how put together we do or don't look.

Moving on After Losing a Parent from Venus Trapped in Mars [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
This post from Venus Trapped in Mars about moving on after a parent passes away was SO POWERFUL to me. I lost my mom when I was 16, and I found myself nodding in agreement over and over as I was reading. It is also a great read to learn how to support a friend who is going through this incredibly difficult time of life.

Overcoming Fear of Change from Maxabella Loves [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
Another ongoing conversation I've been having with the Mister is about which direction that we want our lives to go in, which involves discussing possible major life changes. Big life changes can be so scary because the results are so unknown; enter this list of from Maxabella Loves of 10 Ways to Overcome Fear of Change. I found it be helpful, and I'm sharing it with the Mister.

According to my Fitbit application, I got 3 hours 56 minutes of sleep last night. Anyone knows me well knows that I don't really function on less than 7 hours of sleep. Needless to say, I'm a little bit foggy right now.

I Woke Up Like This [Being the Boss at High-Heeled Love]

Actually this is a photo from Monday morning because Wednesdays start at 5 a.m., and there is no time to sit about with my coffee and certainly no Mister awake to take photos.

[Sidebar: Why is it that when the Mister takes photos of the puppy snuggling with me, he manages to take the least flattering photo of me ever? Anyway, that's me in the raw.]

Like I said, Wednesdays start at 5 a.m. because I have to be a business meeting by 7...and that means functional by that time, too. By the time I actually make it to the office, I've usually had way too much coffee. This week consists of a lot of training. Online training most of today and driving to Charlotte for classes all day tomorrow. It's definitely a two coats of mascara and red lipstick kind of day.

I Woke Up Like This [Being the Boss at High-Heeled Love]

In other work news, I'm prepping the office this evening to bomb it for fleas. Apparently the office kitty left me a parting gift of a flea infestation. It's pretty embarrassing when you have to worry about giving your dogs fleas. Luckily, we treat them for things like this - can't say the same for me.

On a positive note, I'm closing my largest sale of this year so far as soon as the policy arrives in the mail. Yay!

I Woke Up Like This [Being the Boss at High-Heeled Love]

And I found out that nearly my entire trip expense for my work conference to New Orleans is reimbursable through a professional organization I belong to since I'll be a voting delegate for our chapter. Can't really beat that.

How is your Wednesday treating you? What's your biggest accomplishment so far this week?

Disclosure: This post contains referral links. This post is not sponsored by Barkbox; I have a paid subscription and opinions are my own. However, new subscriptions from my referral link will earn my pups additional boxes on their subscription.

Have y'all heard of BarkBox?

It's a subscription box that's geared toward your four-legged friends. Each month, the box contains an assortment of toys, treats and other pup-related gadgets, based on your dog's size.

We received an invitation from a friend a couple months ago, and the pups have thoroughly been enjoying them. Roscoe has been hoarding the toys each month, though a few of them just haven't stood up the puppy teething and chewing.

Paige doesn't really play with toys, but she likes all the new treats. And we're pretty picky about food and treats for our pups, so the Mister and I appreciate that the treats have been all natural.

Each box comes with a card that gives you plenty of details about each item so that you can purchase them again at your local pet store or re-order them through the BarkBox site. (Bonus: it's also an Ebates store.)

I also appreciated that I had the option to purchase 3, 6 or 12 months (with a little bit of a price break), rather than just having a monthly credit card charge.

Don't you want to try it for your pup? If you use my referral link, your dog will get a free month added to your subscription, and my sweet pups will also earn an extra month.

And since we're talking about pets...

We had a rough spot with Roscoe over the weekend. He's only 10 months old, which means that there is a still lot of training to do with him, especially in the way of socializing.

He definitely doesn't know how to handle new dogs approaching him. Over the weekend, we took him to a cookout where we knew that other dogs would be there. However, he was the only one on a leash...and he was not friendly to the other dogs at all.

The evening ended when the neighbor's dog ran over to get some rib bones and got in Roscoe's face. While it definitely didn't get as serious as it could have, Roscoe nipped him and bit the tip of his ear off.

BarkBox Review & Pit Bull Blues [Product Review at High-Heeled Love]

We decided then that it was time to take him home; there were children there, and frankly a lot of the other adults started doing the sidelong look that we get with our pitbull puppy.

It was upsetting; I hate when people decide to judge him based on his breed, without making any effort to know my dog individually. And it's hard right now because the only way he'll get socialized is for us to keep trying to introduce him to other dogs...however, that requires a commitment from other dog owner, too.

So, I'm thinking that this song pretty much fits the bill for Musical Monday this week.

That said, here were my favorite reads lately:

The Awawkening of Yoga from Strength & Sunshine [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
This post from Strength & Sunshine has inspired me to give early morning yoga a shot. Since I don't practice regularly yet, I'm going to start with a pre-recorded workout, but I hope I'll progress to my own morning routine.

DIY Lace Pillowcases featured on Ella Claire [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
As we're reaching a stopping point in the living and dining room remodel, featured on Ella Claire so romantic and gorgeous? I MUST make some of these for our spare bedroom, and I think they'd be gorgeous housewarming gifts as well.

How to Keep Your Gmail Inbox at Zero from I Heart Planners [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
I don't know how I've never read about this tip for keeping your inbox at zero before reading about it on I Heart Planners this week, but I've been taking a few minutes each day to use it on my 6 gmail boxes. Checking email is way less stressful now.

If You've Ever Felt Like Giving Up from Wonder Forest [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
I really admire Dana from Wonder Forest for being so open in her discussion about mental illness and anxiety. This post is a fabulous read about her progress in treatment and is very encouraging for those who are struggling with anxiety.

Office Supply Organizer from Old Jewelry Box from Bless'er House [Weekly Round-Up at High-Heeled Love]
I am completely inspired by Bless'er House's idea to re-purpose a jewelry box to house office supplies. I have a couple unloved jewelry boxes that could be used for similar uses.

I confess...

I know this confession is vague, but it's not a situation that I can get into specifics about on the internet.

It is amazing to me how people that cause the most problems in life seem to have a way of showing back up....and how disruptive to life that this can me. I'm trying to rise above here and not succeeding very well.

I confess...

As a result of the previous confession, I am unexpectedly working from home today...which means I'm not getting enough done because these cuties:

I confess...

The tough thing about working from home is that I also get distracted by housework that needs to be done. This is part of the reason I pay rent to have an office outside of the home even though I could work for home.

I confess...

I impulsively ordered this T-shirt online the other day for football season and just realized it won't arrive in time for the first game. I'll have lots of other opportunities to wear it, but it's a bummer since our friends have an annual party for the first game.

Hi friends!

Can you believe that two weeks have passed us by and we're already at #FitforMeThursdays again? Boy it seems like time is moving quickly. So. #FitforMeThursdays is a linky hosted every other Thursday by Health Not to Nut, Emilie Lima Burke and She is Joyful to help motivate each other to stay on track with our health and fitness goals.

This week's theme is motivation.
Motivation [#FitForMeThursday at High-Heeled Love]

I guess when it comes to motivation, I think the first thing that needs to be addressed is that I'm competitive. Since a lot of my goals are more centered on fitness ability or accomplishment rather than a goal weight or dress size, I look to the people, especially the women, in my life for inspiration.

I guess I have an "if she can do it, then I can do it attitude."

For example, several years ago, my sister-in-law began running an annual 12K and then a few years ago she and my brother completed a half marathon. And boy, was I envious. Not in any way that puts down her accomplishments. It's awesome!

Half Marathon Inspiration - My sister-in-law [#FitforMeThursdays at High-Heeled Love]
Pearls & Such (though she's not actively blogging anymore)

And I know that like me, she started training without any previous sports or running experience, and look what she did! I want to do that, too! It's not about time. I don't know her race times or care because I'm not competing with her - but she's a great example that I can do that, too!
Motivation - Ladies Jujitsu Clinic [#FitforMeThursdays at High-Heeled Love]

This happens in jujitsu as well; there are currently four female black belts in our school actively training. And in our extended jujitsu family, the women really look out for each other. And we all build each other up through the journey. It's amazing.

Currently, a lot of my friends lives in other cities; we do things such as fitbit challenges and cheering each other on via daily mile, and I also look to other bloggers for inspiration.
Happy Friday! I am STOKED to be down 1.8 pounds this week for a total of 62 since January!! I ate really clean this...

Hello, my friends.

I hope this week is treating you well so far. It's been a little while since we've sat down and had a cup of virtual coffee, so I thought maybe we would catch up on life lately.

Virtual Coffee at High-Heeled Love

As y'all probably know by now since I have stopped talking out it, Friday was my birthday. It was probably one of the best ones I've had in years. The Mister really went out of his way to make me feel special all week long.

On Friday itself, we went out for pizza with his mother and our niece. There's something about a slice of pizza and pint of beer that just feels right for a birthday celebration. Then on Saturday, we had some friends come over to cookout. I don't have one photo to share from either event, but I had a lot of fun.

Fiesta Dinnerware [Virtual Coffee at High-Heeled Love]

The Mister gave me four place settings of Fiesta dinnerware, which I've been lusting after for months, and I was thrilled to set our dining room table with bright colors. Also, fresh flowers just make me smile. Doesn't my dining room look happy?

My set came from Macy's, which happens to be offering double cash back on Ebates today as well as having a flash sale of free shipping on orders of $25 or more. If you've been dying for some Fiesta Dinnerware as well, this would be a good time to check it out and earn 8% cash back on your purchase.

Breakfast Nook [Virtual Coffee at High-Heeled Love]

Since we got the house all cleaned up, I was finally able to set the table in our office as a breakfast nook. The Mister and I have been enjoying coffee and breakfast together as a way of spending a little more time connecting with each other. Yes, I did have carrot cake for breakfast when I took this photo.

Virtual Coffee at High-Heeled Love

Unfortunately, the week did not start as well as the weekend went. Mostly because I had to have two filling re-filled at the dentist yesterday. These things don't even hurt, but the sound of drilling inside of my mouth is alarming to me. I wound up with a headache most of the day, and I got some disappointing news at work when I did arrive at the office.

Puppy Stretch [Virtual Coffee at High-Heeled Love]

I've decided that today will go better. And that involves a long walk with these sweet pups as well as making myself a healthy energizing lunch since my mouth isn't numbed today.

On that note, I read this article at Fit-Bottomed Girls on myths about protein for women; I haven't been eating nearly enough protein for the amount of activity in my lifestyle now. I need to change that so I don't feel so worn out at the end of the day.

What are you favorite protein-rich snacks? What's going on in your life lately? Pull up a chair and have a cuppa joe with to tell me what's happening.

P.S. Virtual coffee is inspired by Lucky Number Thirteen. She regularly has virtual coffee with her readers to share beautiful photography and what is happening in life with her family.
