Progress Report: Living and Dining Room Remodel - Weekend 1 and Weekends 2 & 3
Our progress reports on the living and dining room remodel are definitely getting attention. Things have slowed down with the project since we were getting ready to go on vacation, but I'm hoping we can knock the rest of the project out this month.

Most popular FB post
Not a surprise, posts regarding the remodel were also the most interactive on Facebook.

I confess...

We've been having an awesome time at Camp Kodenkan North, the jujitsu camp in Northern California we're training at this weekend.

We don't have much in the way of cell reception, so this will be short and sweet.

I confess...

The views up here are amazing.

I confess...

My Sensei surprised me when we arrived on Wednesday with a field promotion to brown belt!

Since he decided at that moment to promote me, he didn't have a brown obi (belt) with him so I've been instructed to wear his brown leather everyday belt. It has generates a lot of comment from other people at camp.

Friday, June 20

Good morning, lovelies!

Confession is good for the soul, so grab the button and let it all out. You'll feel better when you're finished.

Grab button for FRIDAY CONFESSIONAL at HIGH-HEELED LOVE-button
<div class="FRIDAY-CONFESSIONAL-HIGH-HEELED-LOVE-button" style="width: 200px; margin: 0 auto;"> <a href="http://www.high-heeledlove.com" rel="nofollow"> <img src="http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/highheeledlove/Blog%20Graphics/HighHeeledLove_zps6db62c81.jpg" alt="FRIDAY CONFESSIONAL at HIGH-HEELED LOVE" width="200" height="256" /> </a> </div>

I confess...

Last weekend, I sneaked away for an evening to join some friends at the beach. They had rented a little cottage on Edisto Island and had an extra bedroom. Unfortunately, the Mister was unable to join. We had a fabulously relaxing time.

I confess...

I took the new Dorothea Benton Frank book with me, and as expected, I finished it in about 24 hours. It was an easy, entertaining read, but it also brings light to the abundance of domestic violence in this country, especially South Carolina.

I confess...

We've running most of the week because next week involves a big trip...we're headed to the West Coast for a wedding and a martial arts clinic. It's been more than a year since we've taken a vacation together...and five years since we've been to Washington to visit my godmother, brother and sister-in-love

I'm really looking forward to meeting Beth from Printcess and Living a Goddess Life this evening. She and her boyfriend are being kind enough to put us up tonight in Seattle before we drive to meet my family tomorrow.
Printcess & Living a Goddess Life

I confess...

The other day, we had a predicted heat index of 107 degrees. That's just hot. I had an appointment anyway with my stylist, so we went ahead and chopped my hair off. I should have had her cut it short last month.

Then the Mister found this photo of us from 2007, which is likely the last time I sported bangs, for Throwback Thursday.
We were such babies back then.

I confess...

Another throwback to 2007 - the Mister and our oldest nephew at his middle school science fair. This young man graduated earlier this month and celebrates his 18th birthday this week.

I cannot believe how quickly the time passes us by. We are so proud of the man he is becoming.

Wednesday, June 18

It's time to check in again on the living and dining room remodel. As of our last progress report, we had removed all the lathe and plaster and removed the wall between the two rooms. The next step was insulating the exterior walls; the house previously had no insulation.

The Mister and I hung most of the insulation ourselves, which is not as daunting a task as it sounds. Surprisingly, this was our first team project since we moved into the house where there was no arguing about how to do it. Maybe since it was so hot and we were wearing long sleeves and pants, we just wanted to get it done. It was a relief to be able to turn the air conditioning back on that evening.

Part of getting ready to hang sheet rock involved relocating some wires and replacing some old electrical boxes.
You can see the pup was anxious to help.

On Saturday, my parents showed up bright and early to begin hanging the new drywall. When my dad shows up, you can expect progress to be made. Fourteen sheets of drywall were hung in less than 12 hours.
We were lucky that in addition to my father and step-mom coming down to help us all day. My step-sister stopped by with her children to visit and lend a hand. The saying in my family is "The family that plays together stays together." And helping each other out with projects is considered to be playing.

We aren't quite done with drywall yet, but before we can hang the last wall, the Mister is opening up the doorway between the dining room and kitchen so we can install an arched doorway. Since these pictures have been taken, he's completely opened it, which makes the whole front of the house seem much more open.

The next steps over the next few weeks:

  • New windows installed tomorrow
  • Frame the kitchen doorway
  • Install our arched doorway
  • Hang dry wall on the last wall
  • Tape, mud and sand the walls
  • Paint

I confess...

Today started out to be one of those days. I have a class in the upstate, so I thought my alarm was set for 5:00 a.m. with plans to be on the road by 6:00. I sat up wide awake at 6:15 a.m. Not a good start.

I confess...

In spite of getting up late, I managed to on the road by 6:30 so I thought I could manage to be only ten minutes late...until I spilled my entire cup of coffee in the car and all over my dress..

At that point, I called the instructor and let him know I was going to be late, and I wasn't sure how long I'd take to get there.

I confess...

We had a good laugh at my expense in the class because once I was there, I spilled another cup of coffee. It really was just one of those days.

I confess...

I may or may not have texted a friend who lives in the area when the class let out to say I needed a drink. Luckily, she was able to meet me so I didn't have to drink alone.

I confess...

This is why Friday Confessional is up so late today, but I still hope you'll join the party!

Easy peezy. Now on to the wine. It's getting hot here in South Carolina, and cookouts are happening nearly ever weekend.

Here are a few pairing ideas:

Who didn't get a laugh out of this FB post last week?
And finally, it was wine, but still boozy. These watermelon margaritas that were on special at 116 State were so yummy.

Y'all know I have a huge girl crush on Miranda Lambert. She released a new album, Platinum, last week, and I'm absolutely loving it.

Miranda was on the cover of my Women's Health, and I was reading her interview about a week before the release date. She said that a lot of women has really responded to the song "Bathroom Sink," and I can certainly understand why.

I've definitely had those mornings where I just reject what I see in the mirror. Would it be nice if we were all kind to woman that we visit at the bathroom sink each day?

Sunday, June 8

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Welcome to the Weekly Round-Up linky party, hosted by me and Miss Angie from My So-Called Chaos.

This party is all about sharing those fabulous blogs that you've read through the week and promote our blogger community. I hope it will help you use this party to find new blogs to read and build some new blogger friendships.

So, here are the rules:

1. Grab the button.
2. Write a little list of your favorite reads this week and why.
3. Link up below and go find some fabulous new ladies to be friends with.

That said, here were my favorite reads lately:

1. How cute are these smiley face gingerbread cookies? Maxabella Loves found the recipe on the back of children's book.

2. Cassie at Blogilates wrote a serious look at what a "real woman" looks like that is worth the read. I was inspired.

3. Kristyn at Carolina Fireflies shared a heartbreaking story about one cutie pup who needs our positive thoughts and prayers. She's in the Carolinas, and his sad little story makes me want to scoop little Koopa up when he gets better and give him a forever home.

4. Caitlyn at Healthy Tipping Point focused on personal and running safety this week, which is something we should all be conscious of.

5. I really want to try my hand at making some jam this summer, and this strawberry rhubarb jam, shared at Pink Heels Pink Truck, looks like a yummy place to start.

Good morning, lovelies!

I confess...

I despise parking garages. I always feel like I can't see well enough and that someone is going to come flying around the corner and hit me. And they're confusing; I get lost in them too easily. I told the Mister last week that my idea of the seventh level of hell is being stuck in a parking garage and not being able to get out.

I confess...

Yesterday I had the opportunity to have lunch at book signing for Dorothea Benton Frank. She released her 15th book this week - Hurricane Sisters.

I initially read a couple of her books because she's an author from South Carolina, but her writing is excellent. What I didn't expect was for her to be so entertaining in person. The woman is hilarious.

I confess...

I'm starting to grow quite the collection of signed book by South Carolina authors. At this point, I have four: Dorothea Benton Frank, Pat Conroy and two by the Lee Brothers. Maybe I'll eventually have a whole book shelf.

I confess...

The Mister and I spent an evening together this week hanging insulation in the living and dining rooms. We were both pleasantly surprised that we manager to get the job done quickly with no bickering and no casualties. Trust me, that it not how our projects typcially go.

I confess...

On my way home from my golf lesson yesterday, I watched a driver pull up to a red light next to me in the left turn lane. He then proceeded to sit there for about a minute, check the traffic in the crosssing road, put his blinker on and turn left to run the light.

I don't think it was an oversight or that he spaced out. It looked like he deliberately ran the light. Fortunately, he didn't cause an accident, but the gall of some drivers never ceases to amaze me.

Thursday, June 5

It's been a few months since I've joined up for the Monthly goals party, but I wanted to get in on the party this month.

Monthly Goals

Maybe it's because June started on a Sunday and lined up with the first of the week or made it's just that we have some big projects going on this month, but June felt like a fresh start and a good time to take some assessment of goals.

Here are my goals for the month of June:

  • Work with the Mister to complete at least 90 percent of our living and dining room remodel. (Check out our first progress report.)
  • Do some sort of movement/exercise everyday....some of this will include the physical labor that comes with a home project.
  • Get back to running
  • Finish up all reading for my leadership course and graduate
  • Order new calendars and structure more effective time management for work
  • Update my notebook for jujitsu; discuss with my sensei what is needed to complete next promotion.
  • Get to work on that training to complete promotion by my birthday in August
  • Enjoy my vacation

Wednesday, June 4

After mentioning it several times, I thought I would share some of the progress...but before we get into that, let's look at when we first moved into the house.

The previous owner's favorite color was pink, and this was what we had to work with when we bought the house back in 2007.
We actually closed on the house about a month before we intended to move in. The first weekend, all of the carpet came up, and we pulled down the window fixtures. We removed all of the wallpaper and had the heart of pine floors refinished.

Here are a few photos through the years. I haven't gone though all my photos to find my official "Before photos," but you can get the general feel for the two rooms before the demolition began.

Understand that our house is old....like 60-70 years old. We're talking no insulation in the exterior walls, lathe & plaster and likely original windows. So the first step in our project was having a large roll-off waste container delivered because the plaster walls were coming down.
Since I took these photos, the frame between the two rooms has been removed as well. So now there is one open floor space.

On deck this week and weekend:

  • Hanging insulation in the exterior walls
  • Updating the electrical boxes
  • Running speaker wire in the walls to reduce visible wires for the surround sound
  • Prepping the dining room/kitchen doorframe for an arched doorway
  • Hanging sheet rock.
