Good morning, everyone!

I hope that you are all enjoying this beautiful September morning. Here in South Carolina, the sun is shining, which I appreciate after the rain the last few days. It's time for a nice cup of hot coffee or tea and a little chat.

If we were really meeting for coffee this morning, I would ask you to keep the Mister's family in your prayers. His uncle had surgery this morning because he has continued to have strokes over the last two years. The most recent was a couple weeks ago, and his uncle's mother passed away last week. It's been a hard time for the family. Prayers and positive thoughts that the situation improves.

If we were really meeting for coffee this morning, you would notice that I'm wearing flats again today. My feet are not happy with me, and the blisters from the walk this weekend are angry! I promised myself after about fours in the rain on Friday that I had earned a new pair of heels. I think either of these lovelies from Shoe Dazzle are just the ticket.
Each pair raises breast cancer awareness. 10% of the proceeds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. See? I can support my causes without tramping through the rain. =D

If we were really meeting for coffee, I would ask you if you're going to dress up for Halloween. We have a few friends who throw a party each year, and the costumes get wild. This year, the Mister and I might be at music festival instead, but if we aren't I've already got my the meantime, here's the last few years:

If we were really meeting for coffee this morning, I would say that I can't believe that it's less than three months until Christmas. That seems crazy considering that we're still running our air conditioning. How many of you will be traveling? I think we'll be staying close to home this year considering that last year we were in San Francisco and that the Mister's grandmother will want to see us. She's 93 years old; we have to take advantage of the few holidays we have left with her.
Well, on that note, I think I have to wrap our coffee date up and go start my Christmas shopping. I'm kidding...kind of. Thanks for meeting me for a quick cup this morning. Have a great day!

Isn't this coffee cake the cutest?

My Happy List is so full this week, I almost don't even know where to start. Last week was a great one filled with travel, friends and PINK!

1. I got to spend an amazing weekend in Washington D.C. with Janna and Amy. These women are so awesome, and I was so glad to finally meet them in person. We had fun sightseeing on Thursday, and then there was the 3-Day Walk. I'll tell you more about that later this week.

2. Getting to hang out with a friend that I grew up with while in D.C. Sunday morning, I connected with one of my childhood buddies for brunch and a little shopping before I hit the road for home. She took me to this little Korean bakery where they had the cutest cakes. Don't they look yummy?

3. Coming home to a pristine home. My Mister is awesome. He cleaned the house just so that I would arrive home to a calm, peaceful environment. I'm so lucky to have a thoughtful, loving husband. All I had to do was throw my clothes from the trip in the laundry.

4. Pumpkin ginger soup. Yum! I had a bowl of this on Thursday night when we went to Raku for sushi. It was so yummy. I will find a recipe for this to make at home this fall.

5. Sightseeing around the Capitol. It's hard for me to believe that I'd never visited Washington D.C. before this weekend....Now I can't wait to go back. My favorite monuments were the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.

Wednesday, September 21

Today I wanted to talk about getting enough sleep. Sleep seems to be something that a lot of us are sacrificing these days, but it's so important to our health that we take care of ourselves and makes sure we get plenty of rest.

It's also extremely important if you're trying to watch your figure. Prevention reported this month that "women who got only 4 hours of sleep a night ate 329 more calories and an astonishing 31 more grams of fat than when they slept well in a recent study at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital."

The magazine also reports that "night owls, even when they slept 7 hours, ate an average of 248 more calories than those who went to bed early, according to another new study from Northwestern University."

Over the last few years, I've read that lack of sleep affects our health, figure, libido...and we all know it affects our work or school performance the next day.

So what can we do make sure we're getting more of it? Here are few things that have worked for me:

Set a bedtime

What time my morning starts is non-negotiable; the office opens at the same time every day. Since I know that I need at least 7 hours of sleep to do well at my job the next day, that means I have to be headed to be at the same time pretty consistently. For me, this is usually 11 to 11:30.

I love having technology at my fingertips, but staring at a computer, smartphone or tv keeps my mind awake. So I try to unplug from my technology about 30-45 minutes before I head to bed.

Take a Bath

I know a lot of people use their morning shower as a way to wake up. For me a steamy shower or bubble bath helps my muscles relax, and the drop in temperature helps cool my body's core temperature, which is part of its natural process for sleep anyway.

Have a warm beverage

I also have a cup of hot tea many evenings. A cup of fragrant herbal tea in a cool bedroom really helps me relax. Sorry, ladies. I'm a coffee drinker, but that's a no-no for me after about 3 p.m.

Create a sleepy atmosphere

I don't just mean turning off the lamps. We cover the clock and any other LEDs that might be distracting and take away from the atmosphere. I should also mention that my husband and I have never had a tv in our bedroom. My husband also likes the white noise of having a fan on.

Write Out Your To-Do List

I'm guilty of waking up in the middle of the night because my mind is spinning with every litte thing I have to do the next day. Take a few minutes to do a braindump by writing out tomorrow's to-do list. This will allow your mind to settle, and you don't have to be up half the night worrying about how you'll get it all done.

Calm down

Find some calming activity that you can focus on a for a minutes before you go to sleep. It might be meditation or yoga or as simple as reading until your eyelids get heavy. I keep a few magazines by the bed. Usually, I can only get through a page or two before I'm ready to turn off the light.

What do you do to unwind at the end of the day? What's your top tip for beating insomnia?

Good morning everyone!

It's a beautiful fall morning. A little gray. Kind of cool, which is good because the air conditioning at our office decided to be uncooperative this morning. We have all the windows open this morning to keep the air moving through the office, and it's nice to hear a little nature.

I'm going to keep our coffee break short and sweet this morning because I have lots to get done in the office today and tomorrow before I hit the road for D.C.

If we were really meeting for coffee this morning, I would have to lament that our dryer also decided not to be cooperative yesterday. I was just getting ready to dry my last load, and the dryer refused to start. Luckily, it was a small load and the Mister's mother only lives 10 minutes away.

The Mister is so sweet...he took the clothes up there for me. He had also run a load yesterday while he was home on his lunch break. So all our clothes are clean, which makes packing for a trip a lot easier.

If we were really meeting for coffee this morning, I would tell you that the weather has me a bit concerned. It looks like it's going to be raining on the drive up there tomorrow. I hate driving when it's dark and rainy. Cross your fingers for me that the weather man is wrong? Thanks.

I think that's about all I have to share this morning...what's going on with you? Is everyone else enjoying fall and football as much as we are here in SC? What's going on this week in your world?

Monday, September 19

Sorry about the unexpected bloggy break last week. It just sort of happened, but I'm back today and participating in Mamarazzi's Happy List. Here's what's making me smile this week.

1. I spent the weekend with my buddy Rob, celebrating his birthday. We watched lots of football, drank beer and had a good time playing dominoes and catching up. I also got to meet briefly with Jami from Bowling Adventures to pick up my "Jodi's a Rockstar" t-shirts.

She was so friendly. As soon as I saw her, I told her I was going to hug her since I felt like we were already friends via our blog, and for only being a couple hours up the highway, we'll definitely have to try to get together again.

If you don't know Jami, you're missing out. This girl is fabulous...and she cured her sister of cancer.

2. You read that last line correctly. It's been a little more than a month since Jodi received a stem cell transplant from her sister. Jodi announced on Tuesday that her bone marrow/blood test results showed zero traces of leukemia. The stem cell transplant is successful! If you want to follow Jodi's progress, you can visit her Caringbridge site HERE.

3. I am so ready for our trip to D.C. week to meet Janna and Amy. Only two more days until a fantastic trip for such an important cause....and if you want to help out, there's still a need. Amy has a little over $400 left to meet her goal. Donate at her personal fundraising site:

4. I had a really good class last week at the dojo. I felt like I was starting to understand the mechanics behind forward and backward rolls. I'm looking forward to getting in on a much more regular basis once all my travelling is out of the way.

5. The Gamecocks are 3-0, after a narrow win over Navy. Granted, I would much prefer they play better than they have so far this season, but a win is a win.

Friday, September 9

Because confession is good for the soul.

I confess...

I am in absolute agony right now. I cannot believe how sore I am from working out at the dojo on Wednesday. I told a friend this morning that it should not hurt to push a door closed or put a seat belt on. Clearly, I am out of shape, but this is ridiculous.

I confess...

I'm wearing purple today. Normally, I wouldn't do that on the Friday before a game day because purple is a Clemson color, but I got my new shoes in yesterday and couldn't resist wearing them today.
I confess that getting that photo was entirely too much work; aggravated in part by the fact the my abs are sore, and it hurts to lean over.

I confess...

I have been absolutely useless at work today because I'm way to excited about whitewater rafting and camping. It's going to be a long Sunday getting caught up, but it's so worth it for the Ladies Adventure Club.

I confess...

I was so excited this week about pumpkin spice lattes, and then I looked at the nutritional information. That just won't do. So for the past few mornings, I've been making my own pumpkin spice coffee at home, by adding a little sprinkle of this with my cream and sugar:
All the delicious taste with a whole lot less guilt.!

I confess...

I'm secretly hoping that Mister will finish some home improvement project while I'm away with the ladies. Maybe hanging the beadboard and trim in the bathroom and hallway....just saying. (Honey, did you get that? Love ya!)

My MIL emailed this to me last night, and I thought it was worth sharing. I'm sorry; I don't have a source or author.

Once upon a time there was this guy who had four girlfriends.

He loved the 4th girlfriend the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to the finest of delicacies. He gave her nothing but the very best.

He also loved the 3rd girlfriend very much and was always showing her off to neighboring kingdoms. However, he feared that one day she would leave him for another.

He also loved his 2nd girlfriend. She was his confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with him Whenever this guy faced a problem, he could confide in her, and she would help him get through the difficult times.

The guy's 1st girlfriend was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first girlfriend. Although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her!

One day, the guy fell ill and he knew his time was short. He thought of his luxurious life and wondered, I now have four girlfriends with me, but when I die, I'll be all alone."

Thus, he asked the 4th girlfriend, "I loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"

"No way!" replied the 4th girlfriend, and she walked away without another word. Her answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart.

The sad guy then asked the 3rd girlfriend, "I loved you all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"

"No!" replied the 3rd girlfriend. "Life is too good! When you die, I'm going to marry someone else!" His heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd girlfriend, "I have always turned to you for help and you've always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?"

"I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd girlfriend. "At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave." Her answer struck him like a bolt of lightning, and the guy was

Then a voice called out: "I'll go with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go."

The guy looked up, and there was his first girlfriend. She was very skinny as she suffered from malnutrition and neglect. Greatly grieved, the guy said, "I should have taken much better care of
you when I had the chance!"

In truth, you have 4 girlfriend's in your lives:

Your 4th girlfriend is your body. No matter how much time and effort you lavish in making it look good, it will leave you when you die.

Your 3rd girlfriend is your possessions, status and wealth. When you die, it will all go to others.

Your 2nd girlfriend is your family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for you, the furthest they can stay by you is up to the grave.

And your 1st girlfriend is your soul. Often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world. However, your soul is the only thing that will follow you where everyou go. Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of you that will follow you to the throne of God and continue with you throughout Eternity.

Thought for the day: Remember, when the world pushes you to your knees, you're in the perfect position to pray. Being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect. It means you've decided
to see beyond the imperfections made.

Tuesday, September 6

Good morning lovelies!

I hope that everyone had a great holiday weekend. It's so nice to have an extra day off work now and then, and for me, it came at just the right time after last week's craziness.

If we were really meeting for coffee this morning, I would tell you that the Mister and I had plans to go to Asheville yesterday for a daytrip. Unfortunately it was supposed to rain the entire day, so we decided to postpone the trip for another weekend.

Instead, we would up going to Charlotte do some shopping. The Mister needed to take his computer by the Apple store, and my anniversary gift has been long overdue, pending a trip to a Fossil store. Now the Mister has a new battery in his laptop, and I have a shiny new boyfriend watch.

We also went to IKEA, and I have to be honest and say that I don't get the appeal. The store was incredibly crowded, and most of the furniture/home wares just weren't my style.

If we were really meeting for coffee, I would tell you that we also pulled our bikes out of the shed to take a ride down to the Mister's favorite coffee shop, Drip Coffee. We share a French press of the house blend and an egg sandwich with fontina cheese and roast red peppers. Yum!

If we were really meeting for coffee this morning, I'd have to say that Saturday's game had me biting my nails. East Carolina should not have bee allowed to lead 17-0 in the first half. I'm so thankful that we pulled it together for a win, but we cannot play that way against Georgia on Saturday. It will not go well.

Also, I did okay for the first week of the football pick'ems. I got 8 of 10 games. The only two I missed were Colorado v. Hawaii and South Florida v. Notre Dame. And South Florida winning was a surprise upset anyway. I do have to let you know though, that my brother always helps me with my he did pretty well this week too.

If we were really meeting for coffee this morning, I'd tell you that it's going to be awfully hard to get anything done this week, knowing that our Ladies Adventure Weekend is coming up. It's always hard to focus when something exciting is on the horizon.

Oh, and pumpkin spice lattes start today at Starbucks! Yay! So I think I'll end our virtual coffee meet-up on that note and go for real coffee at the 'Bucks. Have a fabulous week!
